Social media is a network of untapped potential. As a social media manager, I’ve spent a lot of time learning, testing, creating connections, and securing business contracts in the social media world. If you’re not using social media and you’re looking to be successful and get your name out there, you need to start. Whether your an artist, athlete, realtor, financial advisor, graphic designer, life coach, etc. It’s not about being a blogger or store owner always. ANY job can be promoted on social media, namely, Instagram to further your brand awareness and even secure some amazing connections, job offers, and collaborations.
I get seriously so excited about this stuff. Whenever I’m talking with someone about their business pursuits, I always ask if they have an Instagram. It is so valuable. It’s your business card, your networking party, and the easiest form of PR. Literally everyone can benefit from having an Instagram presence. In this article, I am sharing how to use instagram to become successful in your field.
Start With Your Bio
When people check out your profile, they need to immediately know who you are and why you’re here. If you see what I’ve done with my personal Instagram, I immediately say my job title(s), link to my other accounts, and then share my website. It’s straight and gets right to business.
I recently created an account for Wise Soul, where I share what the goal of Wise Soul is and what the topics are. Immediately, if people are looking for that kind of content, they will likely follow.
Then I have my Creative Direction portfolio page, where I share photo shoots I have directed from top to bottom. So I share that I am a creative director, but then I describe exactly what it is that I do: Concept, Styling, Production, Locations. Then I share my tagline: Bring your vision to life.
Formula for a great bio:
- Tell who you are, whether that is an Entrepreneur, Mother, Writer, Closet Nerd, Wife, whatever describes you.
- Share why you’re here. Before I had too many accounts to share on my personal Instagram, I put that I was all about real talk, finding confidence, and uppin’ my style game. If people dug that, they would follow. Share what makes you different.
- Have a call to action. Read your articles, click to see more on your website, sign up to see your emails, shop your outfits. Whatever it is, this is your moment to promote yourself.
- Link to your website or brand.
Vow to Be Yourself
Show off your true colors, the things that make you weird or different. People will latch onto that and stick around because of it.
If it’s for a business Instagram, share what sets your brand apart from your competitors. Define what your tone and stance is. People dig that. If you take a look at some super successful companies in the world right now, like Shop Bando, they have a face of their company. They have a personality and a voice.
Use Your Stories to Show Who You Really Are
Your stories are 24 hour posts that can get to the people faster. These days, many Instagram users prefer Stories to the regular feed posts.
What do you post on your stories?
Basically anything. This is your moment to really show your personality or your brand’s personality. Show the candid moments, the behind the scenes, etc. Then you can save them as story highlights as shown above. Categorize them into different pieces that make up your brand. Here are some examples: Travel, Behind the Scenes, Candid Everyday Moments, Shopping, Makeup, Home Decor, How To’s, What You’re Wearing, Life Advice, Singing, Showing the Process of Your Work…it could go on and on. Show people you in your element, show the candid moments, share the successes and share the failures.
Create a Lifestyle in Your Feed
For this dating ideas account I managed, I put together a feed of inspiring images of what you can do on a date, couples together, and just what milennials do in general. How can you apply this to your brand?
I go into extensive detail on how to plan out and create a cohesive branded feed in my ebook, Aesthetic. Honestly, it makes such a difference when your feed looks put together. People will follow you just for that reason, because you’ve created a masterpiece in your feed. Do not overlook this component when working on your social media.
Use Hashtags Within Your Niche
First, you can do a quick Google search of Hashtags for (insert your brand category or job title). For example, I’ve put in Hashtags for Actors. Tons of different articles come up with popular hashtags. I would advise using hashtags that have less than 1 million posts using that hashtag.
After that, I use Tailwind (which is free, but also has paid plans–I use the free version). You can use their Instagram tool to draft your posts. Within their tool, they have a hashtag generator that generates hashtags that work within your niche, once you enter just one hashtag. I’ve had major success using their tool. Some of my posts get seen by an extra 2,000 people from using their hashtag suggestions. That’s big!
But why are hashtags important? So people that don’t follow you, but have the same interests as you can see your posts which = more followers.
Show Up & Connect
Consistency is key with social media. Keep showing up even when it seems like no one is watching, even when nothing is working. If you keep showing up and posting consistently, people will come. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your social presence. While you’re there: stay real, share things, and connect with people.
While you’re posting, make sure to like, follow, and most of all, comment on other people’s posts too. They’re much more likely to come to your profile if you’re engaging with them.
Be aggressively patient and just keep going. It will be worth it. I waited a long time for my social media to get where it is now. I’m so glad I kept pushing, because I’ve made some amazing connections and have created lucrative partnerships.
